Artist Statement
This project we made our own unique Colorado flags. The top two will be submitted to the Youth Art Month competition. We had a lot of freedom on this project because everyone has different ideas on a good flag. I worked with a lot of colors and tried several different looks. As I looked around at the classes flags I decided I want to make mine more unique.
Once I had the layout I wanted I was constantly messing with the colors. I wanted the C and the yellow in the C to stick out a lot, so I decided to make the sunset much brighter. The yellow circle in the C looks like the sun, and the bright colors and lens flares draw attention to the center, which is the most important part of my flag.
The hill in front of the C took the longest to get just right. At first it was just grey and brown, but I wanted it to match better. So I messed around with saturation, color mixing, hue, vibrance, filters, etc. Once I had it how I wanted it, I thought it looked great because it is several shades of blue and red/orange which matches the flag colors.
The sky and hills behind the flag details I altered also. At first the sky was kind of a grayish blue and the hills were dark grey/brown. I didn't think that those colors matched what I was doing so I took the blue color on the Colorado flag and turned down the opacity. I made it somewhat transparent to still show some of the sky and hills to blend the whole thing together better.
Overall I am very happy with how my flag turned out. I think my flag is very unique because of the color use and depth. Even if I don't win the competition, I am very pleased and impressed with myself for this project.
